Dr. Robert Lancey is the Medical Director of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Services of the Heart and Vascular Institute at Maryview Medical Center. He performs a full range of open-heart surgical procedures, including on-pump and off-pump, or “beating heart,” coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve repair and replacement, resection of heart tumors and operations on the pericardium, or lining of the heart. He is Board Certified in both Thoracic Surgery and General Surgery, serving his residency training in both specialties at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. He trained in heart transplantation at Harefield Hospital in England, and then joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center for a decade.
In 2002, Dr. Lancey was recruited to start a new open-heart surgery program at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY, where he worked until joining Bon Secours in September of 2013. During his time at Bassett, he served as Chief of Cardiac Surgery …and Co-Director of the Bassett Heart Care Institute. While at Bassett, he served as Medical Director of the Bassett Healthcare Network and Medical Director of the Special Care Unit at Bassett Medical Center and chaired the Quality Management Council, the Network Performance Improvement Council, the Business Development Group and the Service Excellence Council.
In 2007, he earned his Masters Degree in Business Administration from Cornell University’s Johnson School of Management and prior to that was an Alley Sheridan Fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and matriculated at the Executive Leadership Program in Health Policy and Management of The Heller School at Brandeis University. He is presently a Lecturer in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management at the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University.
He has held appointments as an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Columbia University School of Physicians and Surgeons, and an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He has published numerous scientific articles and book chapters, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Chest Physicians, and is also a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
