My interest is in the impact of pulmonary physiology on the process of vaso-occlusion in sickle cell disease. In the past 2 years, I have worked with the members of the sickle cell research group at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and I have been the Sickle Scholar for the grant for the past 1.5 years. My work has focused on characterizing pulmonary disease in sickle cell patients, using the signal obtained from a wearable device to characterize the changes in blood flow induced by the neurologic signal initiated by pulmonary events such as sighing and by autonomic stimuli with cold face exposure. Evaluation of the benefits of this device will lead to its use for ambulatory monitoring during periods of steady state and, eventually, during vaso-occlusive crisis.
