In the late 1980s, when I was an OB/GYN resident, my wife and I were patients in a large fertility practice.
The experience was far from optimal – confusing (for both), embarrassing (for both), uncomfortable (for Jennie) and breathtakingly expensive. Both of us felt nameless and faceless, and it made us wonder why the experience had to be so bad.
Fertility medicine has improved significantly since then. It can still be embarrassing and confusing, especially since new technology frequently changes the way we practice. Treatments are less uncomfortable now due to improvements in techniques, equipment and anesthesia. Treatment, particularly IVF, has become much more cost-effective, too. In the early 1990s, the chance of pregnancy was about 10-15 percent at a cost of about $20,000. Today, the chance of pregnancy, at least in our practice, for women under 35 is greater than 50 percent at a cost of about $9,300. The chance of having triplets has been virtually eliminated. The risk of …twins is very low as more than 60 percent of our transfers are with only one embryo. It’s vital that fertility practitioners work to prevent multiple gestations because they lower chance of having a healthy baby.
With all of the improvements that have been made over the years, success for many patients remains elusive: Only about 50 percent of patients who see a fertility doctor will take home a baby. We certainly hope you will be successful in family building, but in the end, I promise you we will treat you with respect and kindness, choose a cost-effective treatment for you, and perform our tasks with the best of our technical ability.
Anyone who has professional experience with fertility medicine will tell you that successful practices are team efforts. If any area of the practice is weak, pregnancy rates fall, and patient safety becomes a concern. We are fortunate to have a great team. Most have been with us for over 10 years. A glance at the Meet the Team page on our web site (www.ivftucson.com) will introduce you the dedicated members of our practice family. We are grateful to have a strong, successful operation with a track record of success since 1995.
