Dr. Sonja Stilp is a spine and sports medicine specialist who joined Boulder Orthopedics in 2006. After completing her fellowship training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Dr. Stilp joined an orthopedic practice in Aspen, Colorado. She jumped at the chance to join Boulder Orthopedics because of her love of the Boulder community and interests in fitness training, such as Pilates and yoga. Dr. Stilp comes from a background of Category 1 bicycle racing, winning numerous events. She is a strong advocate of using exercise to combat athletic and spine injuries. In addition, she has expertise in interventional spinal injections and sophisticated pain management.
Sonja Stilp, M.D. is a native of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where her father practiced as an orthopedic surgeon. She completed her undergraduate training at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. While an undergraduate, she moved up the ranks of cycling community, culminating as a participant in the United States …Olympic Training Site in Colorado Springs. She continued racing and her education at Duke University for original career focus, engineering. After receiving her MastersÂ’ degree in engineering at Duke, she decided to go to medical school. After receiving her medical degree at American University, she completed an internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at Loyola University, Chicago.
In Chicago, Dr. Stilp met her husband, who is an academic physician in the University of Colorado School of Medicine faculty. Together they moved to Colorado in 2002 because of their mutual love of the outdoors and, particularly, the Rocky Mountains. Her fellowship training at the University of Colorado focused on the treatment of low back and neck injuries, sports medicine, and interventional pain management. She lives in the mountains outside of Boulder with her husband and twin sons.
Dr. Stilp is currently board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (physiatry) and Pain Medicine. She is an active member of the Performing Arts Medicine Society, where she presented research on Pilates-based rehabilitation. She enjoys biking, running, skiing, Pilates and Yoga.
Dr. StilpÂ’s philosophy of care is to treat the whole person. She believes in outlining a course of care that is beyond just medication and incorporates alternative or emerging care. Dr. Stilp believes in attempting to get at the root cause of injury, whether that be faulty biomechanics or something structural. She is excited to welcome new members into her practice at Boulder Orthopedics.
