Dr. Stephanie Theresa Frankel, OD

Stephanie Frankel, O.D., is an optometrist at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. She serves as director of the scleral lens program and associate medical director of the ocular surface program. Frankel completed her undergraduate education at the University of Central Florida with a dual bachelor’s degree in biology and molecular microbiology. She graduated with honors from NOVA Southeastern University with a doctor of optometry degree.Frankel completed an optometry residency in ocular disease at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Following her residency, she joined a private practice where she established a successful dry eye clinic focused on recalcitrant dry eye and began her research in ocular surface disease.In 2018, she joined the ocular surface team at Bascom Palmer and founded the scleral lens program. She utilizes a technology-based scleral lens practice targeting visual rehabilitation and treating ocular disease. Using the latest technology, the Bascom Palmer scleral lens service …completes more than 600 fittings annually at its Miami, Plantation and Naples locations. Frankel provides mentorship to optometry students and residents, third-year ophthalmology residents, and is frequently observed by international ophthalmologists and optometrists.  She is a co-investigator in several research studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, with a focus on phenotypes of inflammatory and neuropathic ocular pain conditions using morphologic measures and functional brain imaging, as well as corneal inflammatory diseases. She is currently undergoing an optometry fellowship in cornea and contact lenses through the American Academy of Optometry. She lectures at Bascom Palmer and its annual Inter-American Course in Clinical Ophthalmology. She has authored numerous publications and serves on the medical advisory board of several pharmaceutical companies.
