A lifetime Michigander, Dr. Steven D. Harrington grew up in the small town of Fairview in northern lower Michigan. Following graduation in 1972 as salutatorian of his high school class, he attended Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. There he majored in chemistry and biolog, graduating in 1976. Continuing with his lifelong ambition in medicine, he then went onto medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit. His postgraduate training commenced in early 1980 at Saint John Hospital in Detroit, where he spent a year in general internship and then five years of general surgery training, with his final year in the capacity of Chief Resident. Not yet satisfied, he then went on to complete three more years of training in Cardiac and Thoracic surgery again at Wayne State University.
Since completing his academic training, Dr. Harrington has pursued an extremely active career in the private practice of both Cardiac and General Thoracic surgery. Dr. Harrington holds several …appointed, as well as elective administrative positions, including Director of Robotic surgery and Minimally Invasive surgery at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital.
It is in the area of minimally invasive Cardiac surgery that Dr. Harrington is currently most interested. He began pursuing techniques that would permit one to perform complex open-heart surgery in the mid 1990’s. To date, he has performed nearly five hundred minimally invasive cardiac procedures.
Recently, he joined a select group of Cardiac and Thoracic surgeons nationwide using the Da Vinci Surgical Robot to perform a variety of cardiac surgical procedures. Since the inception of the robotic program at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in April of 2004, over 400 cardiac surgical procedures have been performed, a pace that equals many major academic centers around the nation.
