Growing up in Tennessee, I wanted to be a doctor almost as long as I can remember. The opportunity to help people maintain or regain their health and to work with a team to solve complex problems has been a constant source of excitement and fulfillment. I am fortunate to have a supportive family, including my wife, who has been with me since the start of my education and career in medicine, and my two sons. I attended medical school in New Orleans at Tulane University, which, in addition to being a first-rate school, provided my wife and me with quite a “life education” in one of America’s most interesting cities. I attended school on a Navy scholarship, pledging to serve in the U.S. Navy following graduation. I completed my residency in obstetrics/gynecology at the Naval Medical Center in Oakland and then took my fellowship training in gynecologic cancer at the University of Miami. After retirement from the Navy, I joined the Kaiser Permanente team, well prepared to care for women …with cancer.
