Dr. William Johnston is a board-certified Urologist and former Director of Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive Urology at Northshore University HealthSystem and Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago. He is an Editor for the Journal of Endourology and an Instructor of Robotic Surgery for Intuitive Surgical- having trained surgeons in robotic surgery across the country. He recently joined the Michigan Institute of Urology and practices in the western suburbs of Detroit near Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Dr. Johnston completed his residency training at the University of California, Davis. He completed one of the first dedicated training programs (fellowships) in Laparoscopy and Robotic Surgery at the University of Michigan in 2003-4 and started the robotic program at Northshore. Dr. Johnston specializes in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of adrenal, kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers. He also specializes in laparoscopic reconstructive surgery for …ureteral pelvic junction obstruction (UPJ obstruction), the removal of atrophic or polycystic kidneys, and laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for renal masses.
He has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and made over 50 presentations at national and world meetings. Dr Johnston has been the recipient of 2 Academic Achievement Awards for his research and, most recently, awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
His primary research interests are in biomedical engineering where a recent project include developing novel fluorescent imaging techniques for robotic prostatectomy, launching iPhone apps called %u201CKidney stone app%u201D and %u201CUroflow%u201D to help patients track their fluids intake and output (respectively), and the development of a new laparoscopic instrument for kidney cancer that was issued a US Patent (7,591,817) in 2009.
Dr Johnston is married with two children and a dog (Blue). When not working or with his family, he can usually be found trying to master the game of golf, running with his dog, or watching Michigan Football.
