Dr. Abram Burgher was born in Minneapolis. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Minnesota, graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor of science and with AOA honors in medical school. He went on to complete residency in Anesthesiology and a fellowship in Pain Management at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Burgher believes strongly that good doctors continue to seek out new opportunities to learn even after advanced training and that the best teachers are patients. Dr. Burgher is actively involved in clinical research to improve safety and quality of care for patients with chronic non-cancer pain or cancer pain. He has been the lead author of numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and a co-lead investigator of a human clinical trial funded through support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His current main research interests are focused on investigating the use of implanted pain therapy devices to improve function of patients with nerve pain and …survival of patients with certain cancers. Having provided care to underserved populations in foreign countries, Dr. Burgher understands the value of the doctor-patient relationship. He has delivered health care in Central America while assisting a non-governmental organization based in the United States to develop a small primary care network. He has also provided anesthesia at a major hospital in Mexico City to further his clinical skills, learn the culture and language and help develop an educational partnership with Mayo Clinic. Dr. BurgherĂ¢â‚¬â„¢s interests outside of clinical care include skiing, SCUBA diving, travel, bicycling, camping and hiking with his wife and dog, and spending time with his family. What are you most excited about in working for The Pain Center of Arizona? I am most excited about working for an organization so focused on the needs of our patients. From the providers, to the clinical staff, to front desk and scheduling, everyone who works here does so with a single purpose in mind: to make the lives of our patients easier, and more productive by providing the best care available. What do you like about treating patients with pain? I enjoy being someone my patients rely on and being able to help them through some of the most difficult things they will face. Patients with pain have often been to many different doctors and have had many tests. I like the challenge of sorting through this with them, listening to them and coming up with a treatment plan together that best matches their personal needs. What is your favorite thing to do outside the office? My favorite thing to do outside the office is something active with my family. We like to ski, hike and play sports. Since we have a new baby coming, however, in the near future my favorite thing to do will probably be sleep. See Dr. BurgherĂ¢â‚¬â„¢s touching story about a very special doctor-patient relationshi p on The Pain Channel. https://www.PainChannel.tv
