I was born in Sweden and I received my MD from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. I completed my residency in internal medicine and fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University Hospital in Uppsala Sweden. At the same hospital, I subsequently earned my PhD in hepatology with studies of inflammatory markers in chronic liver disease. I have extensive clinical and research experience in the field of liver disease but also in other gastrointestinal disorders. I came to the United States for postdoctoral research and I studied immunological factors in celiac disease at the UC San Diego, where I also completed a residency in internal medicine prior to starting at Kaiser Permanente.
