Dr. Tamer Abdelhak is a neurointensivist, Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) and the NeuroCritical care Fellowship Program Director. His main work is at the Neuroscience Intensive care unit at Henry Ford Hospital Detroit campus and West Bloomfield campus.
Dr. Abdelhak received his medical degree from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt in 1996, where he also completed a medical internship. In 2005, Dr. Abdelhak completed Neurology residency training at Drexel University College of Medicine (previously MCP Hahnemann University) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then went on to complete a 2 year fellowship in NeuroCritical Care at the Johns Hopkins University Hospitals in Baltimore, Maryland. During his fellowship he trained on Neurotrauma at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma center. During his senior year at Johns Hopkins he was appointed as clinical instructor faculty in the Neurology Department.
Dr. Abdelhak was recruited to Henry Ford in 2007. Dr. Abdelhak has since made …contributions to the NeuroCritical care service at Henry Ford Hospital established by Dr Varelas in 2005. Through his clinical work he helped establishing the Neuroscience ICU at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital and NeuroICU stepdown unit at Henry Ford Downtown campus. Dr. Abdelhak main work is at the Neuroscience ICU where he takes care of patients with catastrophic brain and spinal cord injury. He treats a variety of neurological illness like stroke, brain bleed, seizures, brain infections and traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. During his work he helped bringing new treatment to Henry Ford for anticoagulation related brain bleeding (hemorrhage).
Dr. Abdelhak is American board certified in the following:
-Neurology and Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology 2008.
-Vascular Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology 2009.
-NeuroCritical Care by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties 2008.
Dr. Abdelhak serves currently as the NeuroCritical Care Fellowship program director where he supervises the training of residents and fellows in NeuroCritical Care. He helped develop the first Henry Ford NeuroCritical Care Manual.
Dr. Abdelhak serves on the Credentials committee at Henry Ford Medical group and is a graduate of the Henry Ford Leadership Academy. He is also known nationally through the American NeuroCritical Care Society where he serves on the Advocacy and fellowship committees. Dr. Abdelhak is an invited speaker to local and international conferences on various topics of NeuroCritical Care.
Dr. Abdelhak research interests circle around brain hemorrhage and advanced ways of treating it. He is also interested in traumatic brain injury and brain recovery. He is one of the investigators on the international Multicenter trial CLEAR III designed to address intraventricular hemorrhage as well as the national network of Neurologic Emergencies Treatments Trial NETT.
