Dr. Bishoy Michaels believes medical treatment for acute and/or chronic pain should be catered to each individual patient.“Pain medicine is a very complex field that is rapidly growing,” he said. “The technologies are becoming smarter, safer, and more easily accessible. There’s a wide range of treatment options currently available including many minimally invasive procedures that are safe and very effective in providing my patients with the relief they need. …I believe the future of pain medicine is bright and full of new methods and opportunities to provide more effective relief to each patient.”First drawn to the anesthesiology field by its complexity and the real time application of medicine, he decided to become an interventional pain medicine physician because he saw a close family member go through chronic pain. The experience “made me realize the complexity of pain and how devastating it can be to someone’s life,” he said. “I also enjoy seeing my patients regularly and …witnessing how rewarding it is to make a big difference in someone’s life.”After completing a bachelor’s degree in biology from Baylor University in Texas, Dr. Michaels earned a master’s degree in medical science from the University of North Texas in Fort Worth and a his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the University of New England College of Medicine in Maine. He concluded an internship at St. Petersburg General Hospital in Florida and an anesthesiology residency and interventional pain fellowship at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Boston, MA. In September 2022, Dr. Michaels joined the National Spine and Pain Centers. When Dr. Michaels treats a patient, they both embark on a journey they walk together. The results are the most satisfying part of his job. “Sometimes before even talking with my patient, I can tell by their expression how much a difference we make in someone’s life,” he said. “This is what drives me to do what I do.”The goal of precise targeted treatments, according to Dr. Michaels, is to cater to each unique individual. “To do so, I utilize every tool at my disposal to optimize pain relief and improve my patient’s daily function,” he said. “By utilizing more targeted treatments, we can provide superior pain relief while minimizing unnecessary side effects from medication.”Dr. Michaels knows the doctor-patient relationship is about mutual trust, communication to understand each other and proper expectations to set the tone. “The best patient relationships I’ve experienced were centered around these values,” he said.Away from the office, Dr. Michaels enjoys traveling and learning about different cultures. He also likes outdoor activities such as tennis, camping and hiking as well as spending time with his family and friends.
