Dr. Carolyn Louise Raia, MD

Board certified in 1994, Dr. Raia joined the Radiology Department at SIUH after completing a fellowship in Breast Imaging and Ultrasound at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Prior to that, she completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at St.-Luke-Roosevelt Hospital in NYC, serving as Chief Resident in her final year.
A native of Brooklyn, Dr. Raia graduated from Brooklyn College Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. While at Brooklyn College she received numerous awards, culminating in being awarded the Dr. Jonas E. Salk Scholarship for medical study. She then completed her medical training at The State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Dr. Raia was appointed Section Chief of Breast Imaging at SIUH in 1997 and was instrumental in the planning, organizing and management of The Breast Imaging Center, which opened its’ doors in 2002. She has coauthored several …articles that have appeared in peer reviewed journals and actively participates in the training and education radiology, surgery and ob-gyn residents at SIUH. She has been an invited speaker at local and national meetings.
Active in the community, Dr. Raia is a member of the advisory board of the Staten Island Chapter of the American Cancer Society. She has been a chair of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for the past ten years and was recently honored at the ACS Sword of Hope Ball. Her current areas of interest include all aspect of breast health and care, in particular breast cancer screening. She has over 15 years experience in minimally invasive breast biopsies, including stereotactic-, ultrasound- and MR-guided biopsies. Dr. Raia is currently working closely with leadership at SIUH in the development of the Comprehensive Breast Center.
