Dr. David Mehdi Mahvi, MD

Dr. David Mahvi is the James R. Hines Professor of Surgery and Chief of Gastrointestinal and Oncologic Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He recently joined Northwestern after serving as Professor and Chief of Surgical Oncology and General Surgery Residency Program Director at the University of Wisconsin’s Department of Surgery. Dr. Mahvi did his undergraduate work in Microbiology and Pre-medicine at the University of Oklahoma and went on to obtain his MD at the Medical University of South Carolina. He then served his residency and completed a research fellowship in Immunology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Mahvi’s research interests focus on the development of new biomedical devices in the treatment of liver cancer. He currently has five patents and is in the process of bringing several devices to the market. He was awarded and served as the Principal Investigator for an NIH i?1i?1i?1Surgical Oncology Research …Training Programi?1i?1i?1 (T32) Grant at the University of Wisconsin and plans on seeking similar funding at Northwestern. He is a national and international authority in the field of hepatobiliary cancer. Dr. Mahvi has authored or co-authored over 100 peer reviewed research articles and has presented both nationally and internationally on topics related to cancer. He currently serves as an editorial board member of both the Annals of Surgery and the Journal of Interventional Oncology. He was recently named as President-elect of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT) and appointed as Director of the American Board of Surgery in 2007.
