Eric Heegaard wasn’t always going to be a doctor. At one point, he dreamed of being a rocker. Well, a soft rocker anyway. “I loved the singer/songwriters,” he admits. “Like James Taylor and Crosby Stills & Nash” So after college, Eric moved to San Francisco with his two band mates to pursue his passion: singing and playing guitar and bass.
The experience was fulfilling, but superstardom just wasn’t in the cards. So Eric loaded up his ’73 Dodge van and headed to Seattle so he could attend med school at the University of Washington.
All during those early adult years-while going to school and trying to make ends meet working at a lab and a nursing home-Eric continued to pursue his music, as well as another great passion: cooking. “I love to cook. I love to watch cooking shows. I also make the most smoky, creamy, fabulously fantastic spaghetti carbonara you’ll ever taste. It’ll make you weep with joy.”
It’s that enthusiasm, humor and complete commitment that patients respond to in Dr. …Heegaard. Wrote one satisfied new mom after successful infertility treatment: “It overwhelms me to think how lucky I am to have found a doctor who is so obviously competent and trustworthy, while also caring and compassionate. You are the best.”
Eric credits his dad for steering him in the right direction. “Dad was a general practitioner in our home town of Alexandria, Minnesota,” he explains. “He did a lot of OB work and just loved it, especially the joy of bringing new life into the world. When I went to med school, I knew OBGYN was the right direction for me.”
To this day, Dr. Heegaard brings that same passion and commitment to everything he does. Whether it’s his marriage of 18 years to his wife, Carreen, his two growing children, his jazz ensemble or his favorite spaghetti sauce.
“No matter what I pursue, its all about one thing for me,” Eric explains. “Connecting. With an audience. My kids. My patients. Nothing is more rewarding.”
