Our practice primarily treats those patients who are already experiencing advanced symptoms, often with neurologic involvement. The majority of our patients are candidates for spinal surgery and may have been referred for this specific purpose. All aspects of your case, however, are thoroughly evaluated and taken into consideration when recommending an appropriate therapeutic approach.
Conferences with other specialists may be required in order to identify the best course of treatment. This may include referrals to internists, radiologists, physiatrists, neurologists, physical therapists, nutritionists, psychologists and psychiatrists. Drs. Cammisa and Girardi have been pioneers in the use of advanced surgical techniques and modalites.
COMPUTER-ASSISTED SURGERY: Involves the use of computers to build three-dimensional images whcih enables the surgeon to perform surgery with greater accuracy and less patient trauma.
MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY: such as laparoscopic lumbar …fusion and microsurgical procedures involving micro-endoscopic discectomy, results in smaller incisions, minimal blood loss, reduced hospital time and less post-operative pain.
THE STUDY OF BONE-ENHANCING GROWTH FACTORS such as demineralized bone matrix and bone morphogenic protein offer thje potential for a higher percnetage of spinal fusions.
STUDIES INVOLVING BLOOD CONSERVATION AND “BLOODLESS” SURGERY in order to decrease the need for blood transufusions during reconstructive spinal surgery in the hopes of reducing one of the biggest fears of surgery.
