Dr. Gabrielle Gossner received her BA from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and then matriculated for her medical degree at the St. Louis University School of Medicine, in Missouri. During medical school, she received multiple scholarships in recognition of her academic achievement and potential; she was also awarded the Randall Meglitch Award for obstetrics and gynecology, and the Herbert B. Taylor Award for pathology. Dr. Gossner received residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University, also in St. Louis, and fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. During the fellowship, she also trained and received certification in robotically-assisted surgery using the Intuitive da Vinci Surgical System; use of the robot enables increasingly complex surgical procedures to be done laparoscopically, without major incisions.
Dr. GossnerÂ’s main academic interest is in exploring the potential of novel …therapeutics for treatment of ovarian cancer. She is also interested in the increased glucose metabolism exhibited by ovarian cancer cells as compared to benign cells. The drugs genistein and resveratrol have mechanisms that take advantage of this difference. In a 2007 article, Dr. Gossner reported that the drug genistein kills ovarian cancer cells by inhibiting glucose uptake. Additionally, she is currently examining glucose metabolism in tissue samples from ovarian cancer patients, work for which she received a $5000 grant from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. GossnerÂ’s other recent research has included a 2006 paper examining the CA-125 responses of ovarian cancer patients to other chemotherapeutic agents.
Dr. Gossner is a junior fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a fellow-in-training of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, and is a member of the Alpha Omega Honor Society, the George Morley Society, the American Association of Cancer Research, and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists. She treats all gynecologic malignancies and her special clinical interests include the use of minimally-invasive surgery for gynecologic cancers. She is board-eligible in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and in the Gynecologic Oncology subspecialty.
