Howard Israel, DDS
Howard Israel is a 1977 graduate of Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery. He completed a General Practice Residency at St. Luke’s Hospital Center in June 1978 and received his oral and maxillofacial surgery training at East Orange Veteran’s Administration Medical Center from July 1978 through June 1981, and achieved Certification from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1985. Dr. Israel has been on the faculty of the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Columbia University since 1981, rising to the position of Professor of Clinical Dentistry. He has a clinical practice in oral and maxillofacial surgery with special expertise in temporomandibular joint disease, arthroscopic surgery and diagnosis and management of chronic head, facial and oral pain.
Dr. Howard Israel is an eminent oral and maxillofacial surgery academician and researcher. He was co-principal investigator in an NIH R01 Grant on Osteoarthritis of the …Temporomandibular Joint with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Columbia University.  This research pioneered the our understanding of the scientific basis of inflammatory temporomandibular joint disorders. In addition, Dr. Israel was the Associate Project Director of an NIH Clinical Cancer Education Grant at the School of Dental and Oral Surgery. He established and directed the Center for Oral, Facial and Head Pain at the Columbia campus of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, 3 chapters and 14 abstracts, and been a presenter at numerous national and international conferences and symposia.  He successfully patented a Passive Motion Device for temporomandibular joint rehabilitation.
