I have been in group private practice at Retina Consultants of Nevada for 10 years, from 2005 until 2015. I am now setting up my own private practice in Las Vegas.
There are very few female Retina Specialists in the United States and I am very fortunate to have been chosen from hundreds of applicants to train at the nation’s top eye centers: UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute for residency and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami for Vitreoretinal Fellowship.
The additional 2 years of training as a Retina Specialist beyond the 4 years after medical school for general ophthalmologists means my area of expertise is diagnosis and treatment of any disorder that can cause blindness/vision loss.
It is frightening to lose eyesight and I make sure each patient’s experience with me is both educational and hopeful. I believe that education about one’s condition makes a patient feel more in charge of life and gives one power when losing vision makes one feel powerless. Hope is the …other feeling I give each patient, to see the visit as a positive action partnering with me to fight vision loss/blindness. Even if the disease can’t be stopped or cured, I view the patient and I as a team working together to slow or manage the loss.
Since 2003, I have been an investigator for numerous nationwide clinical trials that have resulted in revolutionary treatments for the major blinding conditions in the United States: diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal vein occlusions. This direct involvement in the development of medicines for blinding diseases means I am able to counsel patients about the latest available treatment options with expertise.
My practice encompasses all aspects of retinal disorders, from the initial diagnostic process to treatment, as well as all age groups. Treatments can range from watchful waiting to major surgery. I take time to discuss the various options available so each patient can feel comfortable with the treatment eventually chosen. As each patient is always treated with compassion and respect, should the patient wish to change the treatment plan, we re-discuss the options and move forward with the alternative the patient feels is the most appropriate.
Many tests performed in a retina specialist’s office must be repeated at each visit. I always sit next to the patient so we can view the results together. This information then allows the patient to combine the test results with individual input and preference in selecting the treatment course. I encourage every patient to be involved in all aspects of care and am comfortable providing honest risk/benefit assessments to guide the patient’s choice.
When a patient has such a severe retinal problem that it requires surgery, I am able to reassure each patient that in the past 10 years of private practice in Las Vegas, I have performed approximately 1,700 retinal surgeries at three hospitals: Summerlin Hospital, Sunrise Hospital, and St. Rose Hospital-Siena. The total number of retinal laser procedures performed is also nearly 2,000. My goals are always to ensure the maximum chance of success with only one surgery or laser treatment and in as painless a way as possible.
