Dr. James A. Sbarbaro, MD

Dr. Sbarbaro completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He also completed his medical degree and internship at the University of Pennsylvania. He attended residency at Drexel University in Philadelphia where he served as chief resident. After residency, Dr. Sbarbaro went on to complete his fellowship training in cornea, cataract and refractive surgery at the prestigious Shiley Eye Center at the University of California, San Diego. Following his specialized training in cornea, Dr. Sbarbaro went into private practice in the southern California area where he has thrived over the past several years. During his time in academic medicine, Dr. Sbarbaro authored several research papers in diverse areas including the comparative surgical outcomes of custom LASIK excimer laser systems.
Dr. Sbarbaro specializes in cataract, refractive (LASIK) and corneal surgery. He now offers laser-assisted …cataract surgery using the newest technology, the LenSx® laser. He has specialized training and experience in refractive cataract surgery, where he routinely implants the latest technology intraocular lenses that can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses after surgery. He also performs customized LASIK procedures for the treatment of myopia (near sightedness) and hyperopia (far sightedness) utilizing only the most advanced and most recent generation of laser technology. In addition, he treats diseases of corneal clouding such as Fuchs’ Dystrophy and keratoconus, utilizing modern lamellar as well as traditional full thickness corneal transplantation surgery. Dr. Sbarbaro also treats a wide variety of common eye conditions such as glaucoma, dry eyes, and diabetic eye disease.
Dr. Sbarbaro is certified and is a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a current member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has also served as a member of the local eye banking society and has volunteered his services through Project Access in southern California.
