The Division of Spine Surgery at the Children’s Hospital in Boston focuses on pediatric and adolescent spinal deformity, both non-operative and operative treatment. Unique non-operative activities include a multi-disciplinary spinal bracing clinic including orthotist and physical therapist (Children’s is the home of the Boston Bracing system, but also uses Charleston, SpineCor, and Triac systems. Unique operative approaches include short segment anterior fusion for adolescent idiopathic thoraco-lumbar curves, thoracoscopic anterior release and fusion, growing rods for infantile scoliosis, simultaneous anterior and posterior hemivertebra resection for congenital scoliosis, and expansion thoracostomy and VEPTR (‘Titanium Rib’) insertion for complex congenital curves associated with chest wall deformity and ‘thoracic insufficiency syndrome’, and monosegmental reduction and fusion for severe spondylolisthesis. We also have a large volume of idiopathic and paralytic scoliosis treated with …conventional methods.
