Dr. Kayla Nelson is a passionate and dedicated clinical psychologist who radiates enthusiasm for her profession. Dr. Nelson’s journey in psychology began with her Doctorate of Clinical Psychology from California Lutheran University (CLU), where she honed her skills through diverse clinical experiences. During her graduate studies, she immersed herself in various settings, from working as childcare staff at a local group home for adolescent boys to receiving training in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in an outpatient setting. Her commitment led her to a residential treatment facility for teens, where …she worked extensively with adolescents grappling with depression, anxiety, substance use, and trauma.
Continuing her dedication to serving vulnerable populations, Dr. Nelson completed her doctoral internship at a residential facility for foster youth. Here, she specialized in the transitional youth services program, guiding young adults as they navigated the challenges of transitioning out of foster care. Following her graduation, she relocated to New York to be closer to family and completed her post-doctoral hours in an outpatient mental health clinic in Yonkers. In this diverse community, she expanded her clinical practice, focusing on children and families, while also providing services in local schools.
With comprehensive experience as a behavior interventionist, Dr. Nelson empowers clients of all ages facing various mental health concerns. She is deeply committed to helping individuals discover their strengths and interests to cultivate a more fulfilling life. Dr. Nelson integrates the practical and mindful components of DBT and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) into her practice, emphasizing a person-centered, relatable approach. She believes in the transformative power of compassion, understanding, and cultural sensitivity in fostering healing within therapeutic relationships.
