Dr. Fiala has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska. She completed her medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Services in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Fiala completed both her internship and residency in General Surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington.
During her 18-year military career, Dr. Fiala served as a General Medical Officer with the 125th Medical Detachment at Camp Red Cloud, Korea, and as a Staff General Officer and Chief of the Surgery Service at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Dr. Fiala belongs to a number of professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons (Texas Chapter) and San Antonio Vascular Society. She is board certified in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery.
