M. James Lenhard, M.D., FACE, FACP, is medical director of Christiana Care Health System’s Diabetes & Metabolic Diseases Center, the Diabetes & Metabolic Research Center and Christiana Care’s Weight Management Center. He is one of the nation’s foremost leaders in diabetes care and research. He has been recognized through the Diabetes Physician Recognition Program of the National Committee for Quality Assurance and the American Diabetes Association for providing high-quality care for diabetes patients.
Dr. Lenhard joined Christiana Care Health System’s Endocrinology section in 1993 and was appointed section chief in 2000. Under his leadership, Christiana Care is ranked among the nation’s best in the treatment of hormonal disorders-a category which includes diabetes, thyroid conditions and gastric bypass surgery.
He also has played a key leadership role in Christiana Care earning other awards for clinical excellence, including the National Committee for Quality Assurance/American …Diabetes Association’s Provider Recognition Award in 1999 and 2004 and Christiana Care’s annual Performance Improvement Award for a project titled “Reduction of Comorbidities in Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery.”
His roles as a clinician, researcher, leader and educator at Christiana Care are many. He has been the primary investigator in more than 45 clinical trials and co-investigator in more than 30 clinical trials. He is:
-Chair, Adult Inpatient Diabetes Guideline Team.
-Chair, Diabetes Management Group.
-Director, Pregnancy and Diabetes Program.
-Director, Insulin Pump Program.
-Medical director, Living with Diabetes outpatient classes.
-Medical director, Weight Management Center.
-Education coordinator for medical residents in the endocrinology elective.
Dr. Lenhard is currently a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia and an adjunct associate professor at the University of Delaware’s College of Health and Nursing Sciences. He is a most familiar instructor and lecturer at Christiana Care, teaching in the departments of Internal Medicine, Family & Community Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, General Surgery and Podiatric Medicine.
Dr. Lenhard earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at Cornell University in 1983 and his medical degree from Albany Medical College, NY in 1987. He completed a medical internship and internal medicine residency at The Miriam Hospital of Brown University. He was a fellow in Harvard Medical College’s Joint Longwood Fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism as well as a post-doctoral research fellow in Clinical Physiology, Section on Clinical Research, at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston.
He is the author or co-author of 14 original reports on diabetes care and research in peer-reviewed journals and has written or created numerous diabetes-related articles, opinions, reviews, book chapters, Internet publications, abstracts and presentations.
