Dr. Marisa Serrato
Dr. Marisa Serrato is committed to educating and empowering each person with the knowledge and tools they need to optimize their mental wellness and maximize their quality of life. Dr. Serrato strongly values working as a team with her patients, and believes that effective work together calls for ongoing communication as well as an understanding of each person’s unique perspective, biology, and experience. She has an expertise in College Mental Health and has focused her practice to the treatment of the emerging adult population.
As much as is possible, Dr. Serrato has a goal of understanding the root causes of a person’s symptoms and to use this information to target treatment. She uses a comprehensive assessment to identify the underlying biological, psychological, and social factors of a person’s mental health concerns. She uses a holistic approach, and may provide recommendations for a person to optimize their self-care, including their nutrition, sleep hygiene, …and exercise. She also emphasizes the importance of the elimination of potentially harmful substances or behavioral practices which may be contributing to a person’s symptoms. Her thorough assessment may also identify more severe mental health concerns which may best be managed through treatment with medications and ongoing psychiatric care. She may review options for psychotherapy, stress-management skills, supplement use, and/or mind-body practices, while also reviewing options for treatment with psychiatric medications when medically necessary.
Dr. Serrato’s psychiatric services are typically most appropriate for mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety or depression, sleep problems, fatigue, eating concerns, obsessions and compulsions, chronic stress, attention problems/poor concentration, and low energy.
Originally from Chicago, she attended Amherst College for her undergraduate education and received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. She completed residency training at Allegheny General Hospital and the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, where she also completed one year of fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She further specialized in College Mental Health at the Ohio State University Counseling and Psychological Service. Through her advancing career, Dr. Serrato has also completed multiple trainings and certifications in integrative medicine, functional medicine, and mind-body medicine.
Dr. Marisa Serrato is board certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
She provides telehealth services to patients when they are located in Illinois. She does not prescribe controlled substances, such as benzodiazepines and stimulants, through her telehealth practice. Dr. Serrato is currently treating young adult patients, ages 18 to 25 years old.
