He is a board certified neurologist and neuropathologist who recently joined HealthPartners as Director of the Center for Dementia and Alzheimers Care. He also serves as neurologist and neuropathologist of the Alzheimers Research Center at Regions Hospital. He graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, finished his residency in Adult and Child Neurology at the University of Kentucky, and obtained his residency in Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology Fellowship at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He is a member of several medical and scientific organizations including the American Academy of Neurology, American Association of Neuropathologists, European Neurologic Society and American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians. He is well published and has received several awards from medical and civic organizations. Most recently, he is the 2009 Distinguished Educator of the American Association of Ringside Physicians and Top Doctor of Whos …Who Global directory.
Before coming to St. Paul, he was the director of the Alzheimers Disease and Cognitive Disorders Program, and Neuropathology Research Laboratory at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Previously, he was Professor of Neurology and Pathology at Jefferson Medical College and Creighton University where he also established and directed their Alzheimers Disease and Dementia Centers and Brain Banks. He has participated in numerous clinical trials that led to the development of the first FDA approved drug and skin patch for Alzheimers disease. Early in his career, he and his team described the olfactory deficits and related brain pathology in Alzheimers disease. At Health Partners and Regions Hospital, he is committed to building a multidisciplinary clinical team that will offer comprehensive and high quality care to all patients with memory and cognitive disorders as well as collaborating closely with the Alzheimers Research Center in order to enhance our understanding of neurodegenerative disorders and develop novel approaches that would lead to the prevention, early diagnosis, and more cost-effective treatment of Alzheimers disease and related diseases. I consider myself fortunate because I work with well trained and very dedicated and supportive staff that truly cares about our patients needs.
