Philip Zapanta, MD, FACS is board-certified in Otolaryngology. As an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist, Dr. Zapanta also serves as the Otolaryngology Residency Program Director, the Medical Education Fellowship Co-Director, and Associate Professor of Surgery at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences.
Dr. Zapanta earned his B.A. in Biology and Biochemistry from Eastern Mennonite University and earned his M.D. from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed his residency at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences. He earned a graduate certificate in Leadership Development from the George Washington University’s Graduate School of Education and Human Development.
Aside from his clinical work, Dr. Zapanta has multiple publications and has presented and lectured at the local and national level. He has a strong interest in resident and medical student education. Dr. Zapanta also serves his country as a …Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves Medical Corps. His recent deployments have included Fort Sill, Fort Wainwright, Fort Hunter Liggett, and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Currently, he performs his reserve drill time at Walter Reed by treating the soldiers and by teaching the military residents and medical students. He has received military awards for his service including the Army Commendation Medal with 1 oak cluster, the Army Reserves Component Achievement Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
Dr. Zapanta’s professional memberships include the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, American College of Surgeons, Society of Military Otolaryngologists, Washington Metropolitan Otolaryngology Head and Neck Society, and the Medical Society of the District of Columbia. He also serves on several local and national committees.
His clinical interests include otolaryngic allergy, sinus and nasal disorders, endoscopic sinus surgery (including balloon sinuplasty), facial trauma, snoring and sleep apnea surgery, hoarseness, and ear disease.
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, coaching his son’s soccer team, playing competitive sports (soccer, basketball, and softball), cross-training and weight lifting, and riding his motorcycle with his wife.
