Dr. Richard Kershen is Board Certified Urologist with sub-specialty Board Certification in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery.
His entire career has been dedicated to alleviating urinary incontinence and voiding dysfunction in both women and men.
After spending nearly nine years at the the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, Vermont where he served as clinician, researcher, and educator at the Associate Professor level in the Department of Surgery/Division of Urology, Dr. Kershen moved to Connecticut to join Hartford Hospital’s prestigious Tallwood Urology and Kidney Institute.
In Vermont, Dr. Kershen pioneered the development of, and served as Medical Director for Fletcher Allen Healthcare’s Continence Center, the first multi-disciplinary center for the treatment of male and female pelvic disorders in New England.
Dr. Kershen completed his Residency in Urologic Surgery at The Boston University School of Medicine followed by a …two-year Clinical Fellowship in Female Urology, Voiding Dysfunction, Neurourology and Urodynamics at The Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Kershen is well published in scientific and medical journals and has presented original research at national and international conferences.
He has participated in numerous clinical trials including studies of botulinum toxin (Botox) for the treatment of overactive bladder as well as novel injectable urethral bulking agents for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence. His most recent research has involved understanding lower urinary tract dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease as well as the prevention and treatment of complications related to vaginal mesh.
Dr. Kershen is a member of the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction, the International Continence Society, the American Urological Association and the New England Section of the AUA.
He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Urology with sub-specialty certification in female pelvic medicne and reconstructive surgery.
He is a regionally recognized expert in the fields of Female Urology and Urogynecology, Voiding Dysfunction in both Men an Women, Male Post-Prostatectomy Incontinence, Prosthetic Urology (Implantation of Artificial Urinary Sphincters and Inflatable Penile Prosthetics), Urethral Reconstruction for stricture disease, Urodynamics, and Treatment of Neurogenic Bladder. He is an expert at treatment of complications related to vaginal mesh implantation.
Dr. Kershen prides himself on the individualized and sensitive care he provides to each of his patients.
