Ronald Kaplan, MD, received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1974. He completed his residency in Anesthesiology in 1978. He distinguished himself by earning the position of Chief Resident. He then completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology at ChildrenÂ’s Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, DC from 1978-79. Always interested in the field of Pain Medicine, Dr. Kaplan took it upon himself to learn and study this field at a time in his career when there was a paucity of training centers for this developing specialty. This interest and training led to his appointment as Director of the Division of Pain Management in the Department of Anesthesiology, Montefiore Medical Center from 1985 until 1994. He was also Director of Fellowship Training in Pain Management in the same Department during the same time and for much of 1999. These endeavors and interests led to the honor of Best Teacher for the 1986-1987 Academic Year by the Residents in …Anesthesiology at Montefiore Medical Center; The Best Pain Center (“Center of Excellence”) in New York City by the Castle Connally survey (The Daily News, Special Health Section, Tuesday, June 20, 1995); and listed as one of the Best Pain Management Physicians in New York (“The Best Doctors in New York”, New York Magazine, page 62, June 7, 1999). His interests in pain problems are varied. He judiciously tempers interventional approaches with more conservative treatments. In 1999, he joined Dr. Russell Portenoy, Chair, Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care, the first free standing Department of Pain Medicine in an academic center.
Since 1981, Dr. Kaplan has lectured and participated in presentations and research. He has been asked to review articles submitted for publication, and has been called upon for expert testimony in legal cases. He has published numerous medical articles, and co-authored book chapters and abstracts.
Patients are seen by appointment. Submission of prior treatment records with a referral letter is required in order to maximize therapeutic planning and intervention at the initial and subsequent visits.
Dr. Kaplan is among New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors” for 2008, as listed in the June 16, 2008 edition of the magazine. The New York Magazine list is excerpted from Castle Connolly’s annual guidebook, “Top Doctors: New York Metro Area.”
Dr. Kaplan was named in Castle ConnollyÂ’s “Top Doctors-New York Metro Area,” 2009.
