Dr. Scott Andrew Rivkees

Overview
Dr. Rivkees, currently the Professor of Practice and Interim Chair of Health Service, Policy and Practice at the School of Public Health, has an extensive background in pediatric endocrinology and healthcare leadership. His notable roles include serving as Florida’s State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health from June 2019 to September 2021, where he also held the position of State Health Officer for the Florida Department of Health. His academic journey began at Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, followed by advanced training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He also held a significant position at Yale University, where he established the Yale Pediatric Thyroid Center.
In his professional career, Dr. Rivkees has held several prestigious positions in the medical field. Between 2012 and 2019, he led the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine and served as the physician-in-chief of UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital. Additionally, he held academic chairs in pediatrics at Orlando Health and the University of Florida College of Medicine. His contributions to drug safety, particularly regarding liver toxicity caused by the antithyroid drug propylthiouracil, earned him international recognition and the American Thyroid Association’s Paul Starr Award in 2018. Dr. Rivkees has been celebrated as one of America's best doctors and is a respected member of various scientific communities.

Dr. Rivkees has a rich history of advocacy, research, and academic contributions in the field of pediatric healthcare. He has maintained over 35 years of continuous research funding from the National Institutes of Health and has over 250 publications to his name. His past leadership roles include chairing the Board of Scientific Counselors for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and serving in various capacities in pediatric and public health organizations.
