Dr. Shinjiro Hirose, MD

Birth Defects and Fetal Treatment; Pediatric Surgery Dr. Shinjiro Hirose, a pediatric surgeon at UCSF Children’s Hospital and its Fetal Treatment Center, specializes in minimally invasive and fetal surgery, particularly for complex gastrointestinal, biliary, liver and thoracic disorders in children. He also is an expert in the development and use of surgical robotics. Before attending medical school, Hirose earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. and conducted research in telerobotics at SECOM Intelligent Systems in Japan and at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratories in Cambridge. Hirose earned a medical degree at New York Medical College in Valhalla, N.Y. and completed three years of surgery training at UC Davis Medical Center. He completed a general surgery residency and a post-doctoral fellowship at the Fetal Treatment Center Laboratory at UCSF, where he researched neural regeneration after spinal cord injury and its …implications in fetal surgery for myelomeningocele, a type of spina bifida. He completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital at Columbia University in New York City. His research interests include fetal surgery for disorders of twin gestations, congenital diaphragmatic hernia and gastroschisis. Hirose is an assistant professor of surgery at UCSF.
