You never plan on meeting an emergency room doctor, but when you do, you hope it’s someone like Dr. Kirelik. We had to rush our son to the ER last month, and we were frantic. Dr. Kirelik took charge of a chaotic situation with a calm authority that was incredibly reassuring. Her experience was obvious in every move she made—she was quick, decisive, and explained what was happening in a way we could understand even through our panic. She stabilized our son and made a terrifying few hours manageable. We’ll probably never see her again, but we will never forget the kindness and competence she showed our family that night.
I ended up in Dr. Kirelik’s ER at 2 AM with what I thought was just a bad flu—turns out it was pneumonia. Most ER docs would’ve ordered the standard tests and moved on, but she sat on the edge of my bed (still in her scrubs, coffee in hand) and actually listened to me describe symptoms my primary care had brushed off for weeks. When the nurse struggled to find a vein for my IV, Dr. Kirelik stepped in and got it on the first try while distracting me with questions about my dog (she’d noticed the pet hair on my sweatshirt).
What stuck with me wasn’t just her skill—it was how she treated me like a person, not just another chart. At shift change, she could’ve handed me off, but instead came back to explain the treatment plan herself. ‘I know ERs feel chaotic,’ she said, ‘but you’re not just a number here.’ Two days later, her follow-up call caught me off guard—I’d never had an ER doctor check in after discharge.
If you’re scared and in pain, there’s no one you’d want more in your corner. The healthcare system needs about a hundred more like her.
