“My calling to rheumatology began during my medical school years, when I took care of patients with various rheumatological disorders such as systemic lupus,” he says. ” It is a very challenging, complex, multi-organ disease requiring detective work and synthesis of information into a treatment plan to help the patient.”Dr. Lenardo completed both his medical school and internal medicine residency at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in rheumatology at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. “I dedicate a great deal of time to patient education,” Dr. Lenardo says about his practice style. “A big emphasis for me is to really get the patient involved in their care and create a partnership. If I can provide the patient with some understanding and insight into complex rheumatologic diseases, they will then be empowered to participate in their care.
