Dr. Victor A. Chang is a medical oncologist and hematologist at MOH’s Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center. Dr. Chang became a doctor because of the “many unique opportunities it offers to make a unique difference in a person’s life,” so he was drawn to MOH’s emphasis on doctors having a great deal of individual time with their patients. “Getting to know my patients as individuals,” he says, “helps me tailor their treatments and anticipate their needs.” He admires in his patients their courage and their “generosity with love.” He also enjoys working with his colleagues at MOH, whom he admires for their devotion and intelligence.
Greatly encouraged by recent advances in targeted and oral treatments for cancers, Dr. Chang is optimistic that advances in molecular genetics will soon lead to even better targeted treatments that focus specifically on cancer cells, making them more effective and less toxic for his patients.
Though interested and experienced in all forms of cancer …and blood disorders, Dr. Chang has a particular interest in myelodysplasia, leukemia, and cancers of the lung, colon, and lymph nodes. He is fascinated by questions of drug resistance and the hereditary factors involved in cancer occurrence and treatment. Applying molecular genetics to a more complete understanding of both hereditary influences and the potential for targeted treatments, he seeks the best possible treatment for each individual.
Born and raised in Long Island, Dr. Chang now calls Connecticut home, living happily in the community with his wife and baby girl. “Both I adore and love with all my heart.”
