Dr. Tan is a fellow of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has Subspecialty Certificate in Surgery of the Hand. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He also obtained additional microvascular surgery training in the Plastic Surgery Department at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan.
His background in engineering and advanced training in orthopaedic, brachial plexus and microsurgery have enhanced and complemented his interest in the structure and function of the human body. This multi-disciplinary training has allowed Dr. Tan to have a comprehensive approach to problems of the hand and upper extremity.
Dr. Tan spent the the first part of his career at the Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School where he taught …medical students and helped train over 100 orthopaedic, plastic and hand surgeons. He quickly rose to the rank of full Professor of Orthopaedics while at Rutgers. In 2015, Dr. Tan established the Institute for Hand & Arm Surgery with offices in Millburn and Harrison.
