Dr. STEVEN J. BEER, MD, FAANS is a BOARD CERTIFIED NEUROLOGICAL SURGEON
Dr. Beer specializes in treating brain and spinal tumors, peripheral nerve disorders like carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar neuropathy, herniated disks in the back and neck, spinal fractures and spondylolisthesis. He specializes in the conservative and operative management of brain and spinal disorders. He emphasizes the importance of careful conservative care for his patients to achieve the best outcomes.
Dr. Beer was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and attended college at Cornell, where he received his BSS in Biology and Chemistry in 1988. At Cornell, he did research in the Departments of Biology and Chemistry where he was focused on the relationship between epidermal growth factor and cancer. His thesis was on the isolation, purification and monoclonal antibody preparation to epidermal growth factor.
Dr. Beer received his Medical Doctorate in 1992 from the University of Iowa. He spent summers and vacations working …as First Surgical Assistant in Neurological Surgery at Mercy Hospital in both Mason City, IA, as well as in Paducah, KY, between 1989 and 1991. He was then awarded residency in the Neurosurgery program at the University of Iowa which he completed in 1998. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Iowa from 1995 to 1997. He was a teaching assistant in Neuroanatomy from 1996 to 1997 at University of Iowa’s College of Medicine and subsequently taught Neuroanatomy at the University of Wyoming Medicine program from 2001 until recently.
Dr. Beer has participated in the development of multiple different tools and implants which have been and are currently employed in spinal surgery worldwide. He has been featured as a Super Surgeon on the Discovery Channel and he has received accolades from News Week as well as Ladies’ Home Journal. He has devoted countless hours of time for Charities including the development of the “Brain Bike” which ultimately benefited the Christopher Reeve’s Foundation for research related to spinal cord injuries. Dr. Beer has lectured and taught internationally. Dr. Beer moved to Wyoming in 2001 where he opened Wyoming Spine and Neurosurgery Associates with Dr. George Guidry.
