Dr. Areena Swarup is board certified in Geriatric Medicine, Rheumatology and Clinical Bone Densitometry.
Dr. Swarup has been practicing Rheumatology in Arizona since 2002. Before joining the practice in Arizona she completed a Rheumatology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and University of Chicago Hospitals. Dr. Swarup earned her Medical degree at Lady Hardinge Medical School in New Delhi. She continued her medical training in St. Louis, Missouri where she completed an Internal Medicine residency at St. Louis University School of Medicine. Dr. Swarup later moved to Philadelphia and joined the University of Pennsylvania where she completed a fellowship program in Geriatric Medicine and Rheumatology. She then moved with her husband to Chicago and completed her Rheumatology fellowship at the University of Chicago Hospitals.
During her fellowships, Dr. Swarup published research papers on scleroderma and inflammatory muscle diseases and received an award for the best …clinical fellow. She has written and published several articles relating to geriatrics and rheumatology. She is a member of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology. Her husband, Vijay Swarup, MD, is a cardiologist in the Valley where they are raising twin children.
Although each of the AZ Arthritis and Rheumatology Associates came to the group from different backgrounds and experiences, they share a vision about how to deliver services to those who need them in the community. It is centered on effectiveness and efficiency provided in a caring and civil environment. It was the challenges of diagnosing and customizing treatment to the individual that drew Dr. Swarup and her team to rheumatology. The evolution of their technology sustains the hope that they can make a difference every day for their patients.
