Dr. Austin Isao Nobunaga, MD

Austin Nobunaga, MD, MPH, has been a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) physician with UC Health and the University of Cincinnati Neuroscience Institute since 2001. He is also a clinical adjunct associate professor of PM&R at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Prior to his career with UC Health, Dr. Nobunaga was a clinical assistant professor of PM&R at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he directed their Model Spinal Cord Injury System of Care for 4 years. Dr. Nobunaga’s expertise is in Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) care. His interest in this field started while he was a medical student at the University of Michigan Medical School and continued during his residency at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University. Dr. Norbunagas passion turned into reality when he established the Spinal (SCI) Rehabilitation program at the Drake Center during his first stay in Cincinnati (1989-1997). He has previously been a question writer for …the American Board of PM&R subspecialty examination in SCI Medicine, which is an exam that demonstrates a physicians expertise in the SCI subspecialty. Dr. Nobunaga currently serves as an oral board examiner for general board certification in PM&R.
his duties at UC Health, Dr. Nobunaga is the medical director for rehabilitation care at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center. Along with these administrative duties, he has held leadership roles in their SCI and Amputee clinics since 2008.
