Dr. Craig Johnson, has specialized in colorectal surgery since 1992 and has been in the practice of colorectal surgery at Surgical Associates since 1996. He is active in bringing advanced treatment options to patients who need colon and rectal surgery.
A native Oklahoman, Dr. Johnson graduated from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, and earned his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He completed his general surgery residency on the Health Science Center’s Tulsa campus.
Dr. Johnson also completed a fellowship in colorectal surgery at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Dr. Johnson is especially interested in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and in the care of patients with rectal cancer. His use of the J-pouch or ileoanal procedure, a recent advancement in the treatment of ulcerative colitis, has improved the quality of life for many patients after surgery. …
Similarly, Dr. Johnson performs operations that permit some patients to maintain a normal bowel function after surgery for rectal cancer. Through his leadership, a major local hospital acquired endorectal ultrasound technology, a new imaging technique used to help stage rectal cancer before surgery. Dr. Johnson is a member of the Cancer Committee and the Patient Care Committee at a major local hospital, and serves on the Colorectal Cancer Committee of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project.
Dr. Johnson is the Crohn’s Colitis Foundation Association Chapter Medical Advisory committee chairperson. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the American Medical Association, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Oklahoma State Medical Association, Tulsa County Medical Society, Tulsa Surgical Society, and the NSABP Colorectal Disease Committee.
