Birth Defects and Fetal Treatment; Cancer Surgery; Pediatric Cancer; Pediatric Surgery Dr. Diana Farmer, chief of Pediatric Surgery at UCSF Children’s Hospital, is an expert in complex surgical repair of thoracic, airway, bowel and cancer problems in newborn, pediatric and adolescent patients. Farmer, a member of the Fetal Treatment Center team, is highly skilled in the surgical care of fetal patients with life-threatening birth defects. In particular, she spearheads research to evaluate the safety and efficacy of repair of myelomeningocele or spina bifida, while the fetus is still in the uterus and is co-investigator on a number of surgical clinical trials. Farmer’s research interests include tumor immunology and childhood surgical gynecology.Farmer completed undergraduate studies at Wellesley College and pre-medical work at both Harvard College and the College of Idaho. She earned a medical degree at the University of Washington in Seattle where she subsequently served an …internship. Her general surgery training was completed at UCSF. Farmer has been on faculty at the National University of Singapore as the Luce Scholar and held a position as assistant medical director for cancer immunology for DuPont Pharmaceuticals at its main headquarters in Wilmington, Del. Farmer is board certified in general and pediatric surgery and is a professor of clinical surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology in the UCSF School of Medicine.
