He was instrumental in the establishment of an inpatient adolescent treatment facility which has continued for over 45 years. He has been an Assistant Professor at Georgetown University Department of Psychiatry and is currently an Assistant Professor at George Washington University Department of Psychiatry.He has practiced intensive psychodynamic psychotherapy with a focus on individuals suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, in particular adolescents and adults who suffered physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as children. He applies the latest scientific discoveries to traditional conceptualizations of the mind. In this vein, he has written on epigenetics in psychiatry and the evolution of parenting.
