Dr. F. William Cherico, Jr. is a native of Austin. He was born at Brackenridge Hospital in 1946. As a small child his family relocated to Irving where he graduated from Irving High School in 1964. He then returned to Austin to attend The University of Texas. He graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. At the university, he was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma, Professional Chemical and Chemical Engineering Fraternity. Bill then attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas where he obtained his medical degree in 1972. He then traveled to Atlanta, Georgia where he served his surgical internship and residency at Emory University affiliated hospitals (Emory, Grady, Crawford Long) from 1972 to 1977. In 1977, Bill was Chief Surgical Resident.
He returned to Austin where he was in solo practice in general and vascular surgery from 1977 to 1993. In 1993, Dr. Cherico joined Surgical Associates of Austin where he now practices general surgery. He was …Chief of Surgery at St. David’s Medical Center for 5 years beginning in 1982. He has served on the Medical Executive Committee at both Brackenridge Hospital and St. David’s Medical Center. He has also served on the Board of Central Texas Medical Foundation (residency program) and has served as Clinical Instructor for the Surgical Residency at Brackenridge Hospital. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the AMA, TMA, and The Texas Surgical Society.
Bill is married to his loving wife Carla and has three children, Richard, Elizabeth, and Nathaniel. Richard and his wife Crystal have a new son, William Kenny Cherico, making proud new grandparents. Bill’s hobbies include sculpting, painting, kayaking, cooking, and gardening. He sings with the Schola Cantorum at St. Mary Cathedral.
