James Butera, MD, holds the role of medical director of Hematology-Oncology at Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital. Butera is a hematologist/oncologist in the Division of Hematology-Oncology at Rhode Island Hospital and also holds the academic title of clinical associate professor, Department of Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Butera received his bachelors degree from the University of Massachusetts and received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine. He completed his residency and his fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at the Alpert Medical School. Butera became a full-time attending in the Division of Hematology-Oncology in July 2000, and continues to play a significant role in hematologic oncology teachings at Brown University. He also serves as director of the Hematologic-Malignancy Section in the Division of Hematology-Oncology. Butera received the Outstanding Physician of the Year Award in 2007, …as well as Brown University Deans Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2010. He was also named in the Rhode Island Monthlys Top Docs issues in 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2011. He serves on numerous hospital and university committees, and has authored numerous publications, peer-reviewed articles and abstracts and continues to publish his ongoing clinical research activities and study work.
