Dr. Jamie Steven Barkin, MD

Dr. Jamie S. Barkin is chief of gastroenterology at Mount Sinai Medical Center and a professor of medicine in the departments of medicine, oncology and pediatrics at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He is also a staff physician at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami Veterans Administration Healthcare System and University of Miami Hospitals & Clinics.
Dr. Barkin graduated with honors from the University of Miami in 1965 and received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1970. He completed his internship, residency and fellowship in gastroenterology at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Miami Veterans Administration Healthcare System.
The author of over 400 scientific papers and texts on gastroenterologic and pancreatic diseases, Dr. Barkin serves on the editorial boards and as a reviewer for many major medical journals. His research focuses on the topics of gastrointestinal cancers, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, and biliary diseases, …and has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Barkin also lectures at national and international scientific meetings. In addition, he also served as a consultant for the Gastroenterology-Urology Devices Panel at the Food and Drug Administration’s Center of Devices and Radiological Health.
Dr. Barkin has won several awards for his role as a physician, teacher, lecturer, editor, author and officer of various medical societies. He is listed in: Woodward/White’s Best Doctors in America; American Health Magazine’s Nation’s Top Doctors; Town and Country’s Exclusive Directory of Outstanding Medical Specialists in the U.S.; Metro Miami Magazine’s Top Doctor; and Castle Connolly’s Guide to the Nation’s Top Doctors.
Actively engaged in the medical community and the military, Dr. Barkin has a distinguished record of service in both arenas. He is past president of the American College of Gastroenterology’s Council of Regional Endoscopic Societies; the Florida Gastroenterologic Society; and the Bockus International Society of Gastroenterology. He also served as governor of the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine (now the American College of Physicians) Florida chapter from 1996 to April 2000, during which time he received seven Evergreen Awards for innovative programs. Dr. Barkin also served two three-year terms (2001-2004 and 2004–2007) on the American College of Physicians’ Board of Regents and was awarded the Florida chapter’s Laureate Award for dedication to the practice of internal medicine. In addition, he was conferred mastership by both the American College of Gastroenterology and the American College of Physicians. This designation is a rare honor bestowed upon physicians who have demonstrated distinguished service to the medical community and to their patients. Dr. Barkin is also a retired major general in the United States Army Reserve and served as commander of the 3rd Medical Command in Atlanta from March 2000 to April 2004.
