A native of northern New Jersey, Dr. Spieker attended Rutgers University from 1971–1975. He graduated with highest honors from the New Jersey College of Agriculture and Environmental Science in 1975. After earning his degree from Rutgers, he attended graduate school at Columbia University. In 1977, he was awarded an MA in organic chemistry and pursued a job opportunity with Merck and Company in Rahway, New Jersey.
The following year, Dr. Spieker received confirmation of his acceptance to medical school at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, New Jersey. He helped pay his way through med. School by working part time as a chemist for Merck and Company. Dr. Spieker graduated from medical school in 1981. He completed a one-year General Surgery internship at St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, New Jersey, in 1982.
For his four years of orthopedic training, Dr. Spieker attended the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. His hospital rotations included …Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for pediatric orthopedics, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City for orthopedic oncology, and NYU Medical Center for prosthetics and orthotics. After completion of his chief residency in 1986, Dr. Spieker accepted a position with Bradford Orthopedics in Dover, Delaware.
A nationally ranked runner while in college, Dr. Spieker became determined to develop a training center for local athletes in central Delaware. He founded the Sports Performance Center in Dover in conjunction with a staff of two exercise physiologists and a registered dietitian. Through 1992, the facility offered rigorous, supervised training programs for top local high school and college athletes in addition to members of the Delaware State Police SORT. The staff also provided routine seminars and lectures for area coaches and athletic trainers. Dr. Spieker continues to give lectures and write articles on fitness and athletic training.
After six years in Dover, Dr. Spieker was recruited by Beebe Medical Center to establish an office in Lewes. He is now on full-staff at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. He is the founder of Orthopaedic Associates of Southern Delaware, an 8 provider surgical group. Dr. Spieker teaches orthopedic rotations to nursing students and local high school students.
In 2015 Dr. Spieker became Board Certified in Medical Acupuncture. He is one of the few orthopedic surgeons in the country with this additional certification and expertise.
Dr. Spieker was featured in the Winter 1996 edition of the Beacon, a magazine of health information published by Beebe Medical Center.
Dr. Spieker was named a Top Doctor on several occasions by Delaware Today Magazine. The doctors were the most recommended by their professional peers, as determined by a Delaware Today Magazine survey of licensed physicians in Delaware.
