A graduate of Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, Dr. Colonna received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He trained in general surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he completed a two-year research fellowship in liver transplantation as well as a two-year clinical fellowship in liver transplantation. From 1992 until 1998, Dr. Colonna served as director of the liver transplant program at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. While at Walter Reed, he also performed transplants at the Inova Transplant Center in Fairfax, Virginia. From 1998 through July 2002, Dr. Colonna served as director for liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery at the University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore, Maryland. While in Baltimore, Dr. Colonna held an appointment as an associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
A Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Colonna …has authored or co-authored numerous published manuscripts concerning liver, pancreas and kidney transplantation as well as hemoaccess intervention. His areas of special interest include kidney transplantation, complex hepatobiliary surgery and dialysis access maintenance. Dr. Colonna recently succeeded Dr. Richard Hurwitz as surgical director of the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Renal Transplant Program.
Dr. Colonna has admitting privileges at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Sentara Leigh Hospital, and Sentara Bayside Hospital.
