Dr. Weiner is Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Medicine at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and former Chief of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. In addition to a private practice in psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, he is currently directing the 4-year curriculum in physician-patient communication in the new Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.
Dr. Weiner received his MD from New York University Medical School and his PhD in Physiology and Biophysics from New York University. He did residency training in psychiatry at NYU/Bellevue and a fellowship in public psychiatry at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr Weiner has received numerous national and regional awards. In 2001, his Program in the Patient-Doctor Relationship at Long Island Jewish Medical Center won the first Alan Stoudemire Award from the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine for innovation and Excellence in Psychiatric …Education. He also received a Faculty Scholar Award in 2002 from the Project on Death in America in acknowledgement of his work in medical communication. This prestigious award recognized emerging leaders in healthcare who have dedicated themselves to improving medical care near the end of life. He has trained hundreds of physicians in communication skills throughout the United States and in Canada. In 2007, the Palliative Care Service at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, of which he was the founding medical director, received %u201CTeam of the Year Award%u201D from the Hospice Care Network of New York.
Dr. Weiner has he has published many articles about communication and medical decision-making. He has a private practice in psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, which focuses on depression, anxiety, burnout in healthcare professionals and bereavement.
