Dr. Lokesh Bathla, MD

The road from New Delhi, India to San Antonio, Texas, might seem to be an unlikely career path for just about anyone except a determined and ambitious transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon like Dr. Lokesh Bathla.
Dr. Bathla knew early in his medical career he wanted to be a surgeon. “In my first surgery rotation in medical school, time just flew by. That wasn’t the case with the medical rotation, however, and I knew that surgery was my calling,” he says. He quickly discovered his true passion would be hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, a particularly difficult surgical discipline.
Dr. Bathla completed his medical degree at RNT Medical College in Udaipur, India and his surgical residency at Maulana Medical College in New Delhi, India.
For the would-be hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon, surgical oncology and transplantation surgery are the two areas where he could develop his skills and experience. “In Delhi, there was no transplant option. Patients who came in …with end-stage liver disease didn’t do well. They succumbed to their illness because they couldn’t get a transplant. So, for me, the transplant route to HPB surgery was ideal: I got to treat otherwise-terminal illnesses, I got to learn transplant surgery and, as someone who could transplant livers, I became experienced in performing complex liver surgeries,” Dr. Bathla says.
The next turn on the road involved the decision to come to the United States, where he would have to redo his surgical residency which he completed at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. He really enjoyed his time at the Creighton University: it was an excellent, comprehensive program. He was impressed by his colleagues at the University of Nebraska, and after checking out a number of well-known transplant programs all over the U.S., he decided to stay in Omaha complete his fellowship in transplantation surgery at the University of Nebraska.
But after enduring seven Nebraska winters, Dr. Bathla decided to move his young family to a warmer climate and joined Texas Transplant Physician Group in San Antonio in early 2014.
He performs abdominal organ transplant surgeries, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeries using state-of-the-art technology at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital, a campus of Methodist Hospital.
Dr. Bathla is board certified in surgery and is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Transplant Surgeons and International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.
