Margaret Smith, M.D., or Dr. Maggie, as many of her patients call her, is from Larned, Kan., a farming community of about 4,000 residents. Dr. Smith selected obstetrics and gynecology as her medical specialty because it allows her to see patients in the office and develop long-term relationships with them. “Plus, I can perform surgery. Medically speaking, it’s the best of all worlds! I have always loved having my own patients,” she says, “and I am grateful for those patients who had confidence and faith in me, even during my training.”
Dr. Smith loves all aspects of gynecology, but one thing she particularly enjoys is making a connection with high school and college-aged women. “I want to make sure their first visit is comfortable and lay the groundwork for long-term future care.”
As a woman with a busy career and family, Dr. Smith knows what itÂ’is like to balance the issues women face today. “If I could give one bit of advice to all my patients, and to women in general, it …would be to practice a healthy lifestyle: eat well, exercise, and minimize bad habits,” she says. “Everyone seems to want a magic pill. The truth is that it’s a very simple prescription, but it takes discipline. Take time to manage your own health. Women in particular tend to take care of everyone else first. They really need to take care of themselves first.”
Dr. Smith and her husband, Andy, have one daughter, Elizabeth (Libby), who was born in 1996. “Libby has added an incredible dimension to my life,” she says. Dr. Smith’s pregnancy was a bit rocky, so she can definitely sympathize with the challenges her patients face. “The delivery was great though,” she says. “Thank God for epidurals!
