I am a medical oncologist with a special expertise in developing new chemotherapy regimens for colorectal cancer. During my 30 years at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, I conducted some of the first studies using drugs such as irinotecan and oxaliplatin, which are now widely used in patients with colorectal cancer. I also was the lead investigator of a large, multi-institutional study that helped in the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of oxaliplatin for colorectal cancer treatment in the U.S. My research has included numerous studies of regional therapy, which is used when tumors have spread to the liver and involves administering drugs directly into the liver through a pump. Encouraging results of the effectiveness of regional therapy have led us to broaden its use in patients who have had liver metastases surgically removed (resected). We also are giving regional therapy in combination with systemic therapy (chemotherapy), with the goal of improving the treatment of liver …metastases from colorectal cancer. In addition to my clinical and research responsibilities at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, I am a Professor of Medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. I am also active in oncology issues on a national level. In 1990, I served as a member of the Oncology Drug Advisory Committee, and I have held various positions at the American Society of Clinical Oncology. I was one of the ASCO’s Directors from 1990-1993; Chairperson of the Membership Committee from 1986-1989; Chairperson of the Special Awards Committee from 1991-1995; a member of the ASCO Grant Selection Committee in 2003-2004; and a member of the CEA Tumor Marker Panel. In addition, I was Principal Investigator of a National CALGB protocol evaluating regional liver therapy versus systemic therapy in patients whose disease spread from the colon to the liver. The study demonstrated a significant increase in survival with regional therapy. I am also a scientific reviewer for many journals and on the editorial board of three journals.
